Description:
The Sea Kayaking course is an introductory course intended for individuals who have little to no kayaking experience. The course will cover topics such as: understanding and demonstrating effective risk management as it pertains to sea kayaking, navigation techniques, paddling techniques, and understanding functionality of equipment used. These are just the basics. This course will not necessarily qualify anyone to lead their own trip or take the place of additional experience and sound judgement.
Due to the nature of the course, all sessions are mandatory to attend. There will be an extended trip associated with this course to an off-campus site in order to get hands on experience. Your grade will be evaluated based on a combination of participation, knowledge, and skills.
- Class room session times, locations, dates, trip dates, and fees are subject to change. There will be no refund of deposit or trip fee if this is required. A current OSU e-mail address will be used to contact all students enrolled in a class for notification of any changes.

Trips depart Friday afternoon and institutional excuses for missed classes Friday are not provided. Most trips return to campus by 8 pm on Sunday at the latest. Some trips occur during holidays and academic breaks and may last more than a weekend.
- Experienced trip leaders, with specialized wilderness first aid training, will support you while in the field and actively teach how to thrive while kayaking. For example, instructors will teach you how to pack your sea kayak and set up a tent; they will not do everything for you. It is expected that students work together as a group and be supportive of each other while following instructions from instructors.
