The Sport, Fitness and Health Program (SFHP) is an activity based academic program in the Kinesiology unit of the Department of Human Sciences. SFHP provides nearly sixty sport, fitness and health classes for more than 8,000 Ohio State students each year. The Kinesiology unit provides curricular and academic oversight to this program. As such, the faculty in this section has developed a vision and a mission for this program.
Vision
The Sport, Fitness and Health Program (SFHP) envisions the OSU students as a community of active, healthy, fit, and enlightened individuals pursuing a higher quality of life. A vision of the program is that the SFHP will become a national leader in offering an academically sound sport, fitness, and health program for all OSU students.
Mission
To enhance the health and quality of life of our students through the promotion of an active lifestyle. The SFHP is a manifestation of our social responsibility to offer a program of services to educate and train students about (a) the physiological and psychosocial benefits of the sport and physical activity; (b) the dynamics and interplay of physical activity, fitness, health, and quality of life; (c) the psychomotor skills related to sport, exercise and leisure; and (d) the cognitive and behavioral skills necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle. By providing opportunities for students to engage in a variety of physical activities, it is the intent of the SFHP to induce behavior changes among students that have an enduring effect on maintaining health through physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.
